My journey as a composer began at the piano, but the classical guitar
has always held a special place in my heart. Its gentle resonance, its
delicate strength - this instrument has a way of speaking to the soul
unlike any other. Years ago, during a memorable collaboration with
virtuoso guitarist Stelios Golgaris and the Paderewski Symphony
Orchestra, the seed for “Concerto Olympico” was planted. It was his
request and our shared vision, with the support of Vassilis Mastorakis,
that inspired this work, which I wholeheartedly dedicate to them.
In this concerto, I aim to achieve a harmonious convergence between the
guitars and the orchestra and between tradition and innovation, intimacy
and grandeur. In writing this piece, I sought to explore the lyrical
possibilities of the guitar, pairing it with the full, sweeping breadth
of a symphony orchestra to create a dialogue that
transcends the boundaries of the individual instruments and, I believe,
transforms into something more significant - a musical union. This piece
marks a defining point in my journey as a composer, and it is a great
honour for me to collaborate with the exceptional solo guitarists
Stelios Golgaris and Vassilis Mastorakis, also known as “Stelios &
Vassilis”, a world-renowned guitar duo with an impressive discography
and numerous awards. Their inspired musicality and virtuosity bring the
performance a unique emotional depth and vitality. It is the soul of
these two virtuoso performers that transformed my notes into a broader
acoustic experience. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for their
invaluable contribution to this work.
It is also a special honour for me to have the contribution of my
esteemed friend, the conductor of the “Vienna Mozart Orchestra” András
Deák. Through his virtuoso baguette, he inspired precision and passion
in this work. His profound musical insight and sensitivity have elevated
this composition, bringing emotions to the fore.
I am especially grateful to
Dimitris Bellos, Dr. Bell, my dear friend and exceptionally talented
musician and sound engineer, for recording the guitars at Decibel Studio
in Athens.
Andreas Georgalis for his skilful mixing at City Studios.
Nigel Palmer, whose exceptional final mixing and mastering at Lowland
Masters - England elevated the project's final sound quality.
Dzio (Giannis Georgountzos), graphics designer, for the cover design,
visual editing of the credits in the PDF, and the videos.
Irini Kolovou, beloved artist-photographer, for capturing my inner self
in her photos.
Lastly, I express my sincere gratitude to the “APOLLON” organisation for
its invaluable support, without which this production would not have
been possible.
To my colleagues and every listener, thank you for being part of this
musical journey.
